8 Tips for Drinking More Water
Intro
Did you know that water makes up 60% of our body?
We often hear from clients that it’s difficult to drink water or to ensure that they are getting adequate amounts of water every day. We understand this challenge, especially when you are busy and always on the go. So we put together our top 8 tips for drinking more water throughout the day in hopes that some of these may be just what you need in order to stay hydrated!
Tip 1: Infused Water
One of the main complaints we hear about drinking water is that it is boring! Thankfully it doesn’t have to be! We love infusing water with all sorts of delicious flavors from natural ingredients. Chop up some citrus or berries and toss it in your water bottle or pitcher of water and let the flavors seep into your H2O!
Some of our favorite combinations are:
Grapefruit and orange
Lemon and orange
Lime and mint
Strawberries and raspberries
Cucumber
Lemon
Pineapple
BlackBerry and mint
Tip 2: Herbal Tea
Herbal tea is a great option for drinking more water throughout the day. You want to make sure that it is herbal tea and has no caffeine in it as caffeine dehydrates you - which is the opposite of what we are going for! So as long as you are choosing a tea that has no caffeine it's a great way to add flavor to your water! You can drink this hot or cold, but do be mindful of adding sweeteners which can quickly lead up to a great deal of added carbohydrates from sugar.
Some of our favorite herbal teas are:
Peppermint
Ginger
Hibiscus
Lemon
Chai
Chamomile
DAVID’S TEA has an AMAZING selection of loose leaf teas!
Tip 3: Use a Fun Water Bottle
Sometimes all you need is a change in how you consume water! There are lots of great water bottles out there that can make drinking your water every day more fun. I personally love my hydroflask! It keeps my water cold (I prefer super cold water) and I find it easy to grab and go. Sometimes drinking from a container that is your favorite color, one that’s decorated or just something visually pleasing can make drinking your water that much more enjoyable.
Tip 4: Use a Straw
I find that I drink more water easily when I use a straw. Something about how it can be hands-free while I type or am on conference calls, or while I drive, that just makes it so much easier to sip! I can easily consume a whole liter of water faster with a straw than if I didn’t have one. For me it’s so much more enjoyable!
Tip 5: Time it Out and Set Goals
Set goals for how much water to consume by a certain time each day. You can even find large water bottles that have time stamps written on them! It’s helpful to set goals for yourself to drink a certain number of ounces or liters by a certain time as it provides some motivation, goals and an easy marker to indicate if you are behind on your water consumption that day. I use a liter water bottle and know that by 1pm I should have had two of them. It’s an easy gauge to know if I’m on track or behind in my water game. Plus sometimes giving yourself a challenge/goal makes it easier to follow through on!
Tip 6: Sparkling Water
Sparkling water is a great option for those looking for flavor and fun! There are lots of great flavor options to choose from! Whether you like it plain or flavored this is a fun way to consume more water. Bubbles make everything more fun! Especially if you’re someone who has historically really gravitated towards consuming soft beverages, this is an excellent substitute.
Tip 7: Drink a Glass of Water Before Every Meal or Snack
It can be easy to mistake thirst for hunger. We recommend trying to drink a tall glass of water before sitting down for your next meal or snack. It not only will help keep you hydrated, but you may find that you weren’t actually hungry to begin with.
Tip 8: Work Your Way Up Gradually
Don’t try and go from drinking 8oz of water a day to drinking 90oz a day in one week. You’ll feel like you’ve failed, and you’ll be running to the bathroom! Instead work your way up gradually. Try adding a glass of water to your table with every meal. Or try increasing from two water bottles a day to three. Placing a great deal of pressure on yourself to go from zero to one hundred will just leave you frustrated. Pace it out, and work your way up gradually.
